READ TWICE!A poorly programmed workout trained consistently is more effective, than a great workout programmed, but trained inconsistently. I listened to this on one of my many podcasts today. I had to go back and listen to it a second time and make sure I heard it correct.
This simple sentence needs to be educated to beginner coaches and everyday people who want to seek some sort of positive change, and it needs to also be re-educated to healthcare professionals (PT’s, strength coaches, etc.) because the power of consistency and discipline GO A LONG WAY. Anecdotally, I have trained physically de-conditioned clients for close to a year without changing much in their routine; we stuck to a solid 1 training session a week, worked on building a perfect foundation of stabilization strength, balance, and coordination, and gradually worked our way to more taxing gross movements. Why only 1 session per week? Because it is what works best for their busy schedules and it provided a realistic baseline to commit to. All of them saw strength improvements, joint mobility improvements which alleviated some chronic pain issues, and lastly but most important, training with that consistency provided them a solid sense of purpose and it carried over into their personal and professional life.
If you are currently in a Lower/Upper Body training split routine, you have all your percentages calculated, and you even worked up a nifty spreadsheet, but you only commit to it with a half ass approach; you are not helping yourself. Get back to the basics (push, pull, hinge, rotate, etc.) and build off from that set foundation with that new mindset of just showing up and focusing on “quality over quantity” in your own training.
